Abstract. Simulation is an important tool in the design process as it allows for a degree of optimization prior to prototyping and construction. This research is an effort to mathematically model a pulling tractor under a progressive load. There are already models available that can optimize tractor parameters, such as ballasting and inflation pressures, under a constant load. However, they are not intended for optimizing distance under progressive loading. The main objective of our simulation was to extend those models to determine the ideal weight distribution, weight transfer, and drive ratio that would result in the largest pull distance for the ASABE International Quarter Scale Tractor Student Design Competition. Using numerical simulation, we were able to simulate a quarter scale tractor pull scenario. Comparisons to real world data have been done using prior competition and testing data. Trends in modeled results have shown good agreement with those in real results. The model will be further validated using the 2013 tractor and competition data
