Abstract. A rotary test fixture was deigned to evaluate the performance of a tracking total station (TTS) and to develop dynamic global navigation satellite-based system (GNSS) error models. The rotary test fixture consisted of several electrical and mechanical components that were integrated to form the system. The major components include a variable speed drive mechanism, embedded control system, and a high-precision optical encoder for position feedback. Angular velocity and acceleration criteria were used to specify the component requirements and were based on velocities used in ISO 12188-1. The test fixture was capable of producing angular velocities up to 5.0 rad/s (+/-0.007 rad/s) at a 1 m radius.
