Abstract. Soil compaction has posed serious problems in agricultural production and so it has become necessary to understand and evaluate compaction that has been induced by agricultural implements especially due to tractor passes on arable terrains. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the effect of tractor induced compaction on soil properties under conventional tillage (CT). The soil properties (response variables) observed were bulk density, cone index, shear strength, bulk density and moisture content. Treatments were five different traffic frequencies, 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 tractor passes repeatedly on the same track in each case. Each treatment was on a plot of size 16 x 4 m with 3 m wide buffer zones between plots to avoid interactions. Soil properties were observed with standard methods to study the effects of compaction on them. Simple polynomial functions can best describe the relationships. The percent increase in cone index, shear strength and bulk density were higher at lower levels of compaction (5 and 10) than at higher levels (15 and 20 passes). The effect of induced compaction by agricultural tract was modeled by multiple regression analysis for accurate prediction of bulk density.
