Abstract. Optimization techniques are used extensively for strategic and operations planning in a large number of system engineering applications. In the dairy farm industry, though development is of great interest and importance, analyzing and quantifying the benefits of manure separation can be a challenging task, usually because of the complex interacting system that involves both environmental and monetary concerns. We build here a sequence of strategic level optimization models for dairy farms. Connected with any chemical engineering model that describes a specific manure separation configuration, our models determine the optimal ways to use separated manure products over the dairy farmland or to export them for monetary income, over the short-term as well as long-term time horizon. Our models can be used to optimize operational decisions in current dairy farms, or to provide aid while designing new dairy farms with manure processing considerations.
