Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties of Some Deep-rhizome Chinese Herbal Medicines

Abstract. Achyranthes, Liquorice and Astragalus, three kinds of typical Chinese herbal medicines, were selected to measure their physical sizes of roots and study their mechanical properties respectively in this paper. The average value of roots depth, taproot diameter and roots circumferential diameter of achyranthes were 202.10mm, 8.64mm and 60.29mm respectively. The average value of roots depth, taproot diameter and roots circumferential diameter of Liquorice were 220.67mm, 12.44mm and 124.73mm respectively. The average value of roots depth, taproot diameter and roots circumferential diameter of Aastragalus were 155.30mm, 15.97mm and 118.36mm respectively. The tensile and compressive test results showed that the average tensile stress of Achyranthes, Liquorice and Astragalus were 3.091MPa, 8.272Mpa and 16.338MPa respectively, and their curves of compressive taproot were also obtained. Impact tests on Achyranthes, Liquorice and Astragalus were carried out by self-made impact test bench, test results showed that the average energy of impact epidermal damage were 0.141J, 4.787J and 0.129J respectively. These test results provided the basis for the development of the new type of low damage deep-rhizome Chinese herbal medicine harvesting machineries.
