A Survey on the Utilization of Agricultural Machinery in South Korea

Abstract. The government has driven agricultural mechanization in South Korea since 1960’s and surveyed mechanization indices such as annual worked area, annual used time, mechanized ratio, and the number of machineries supplied. From 2006, survey on annual worked area and annual used time have been conducted by National Academy of Agricultural Science(NAAS). In this paper, results of this survey for five major agricultural machineries by NAAS in 2007, 2010 and 2012 were summarized.

The samples were 1,500 farms in 300 villages all over the country, selected by stratified three stage cluster sampling method. Sample farms were interviewed by structuralized questionnaires. Main surveyed items were annual worked area and annual used time of agricultural machinery in the previous year. Target machines of surveys were five; power-tiller, tractor, rice transplanter, combine harvester and grain dryer.

The survey results showed that the use of power-tiller, tractor and walking type rice transplanter had a decreasing tendency. A power-tiller was mainly used to transport, occupying 48.4% ~ 56.1% of the total annual used time. Land preparation, which includes plowing, rotavation and leveling, occupied over 60% of total area and about a half of total hour of tractor. A riding type rice transplanter had been used more than walking type, 5.0 ~ 5.9 times in worked area and 2.5 ~ 3.1 times in used time. The use of both combine harvester and grain dryer had increased in 2010 survey and then decreased in 2012 survey.

Because the decrease of annual use of agricultural machinery can be result in a rise of production cost, it is necessary to develop a new policy to heighten their use.
