Mathematical modeling and Simulation of an Anti-blocking Mechanism for No-till Maize Planter

Abstract. Adoption of conservation tillage in two-crops-a-year areas in Huabei Plain in China encountered some difficulties for maize planting due to heavy wheat straw and residue. A rotary drum-type anti-blocking mechanism was developed to solve this problem. The mechanism was mounted in front of each opener shank of the maize planter and the drum was rotated driven by ground wheel at a certain speed. Based on the theories of circulative stream and boundary layer in fluid mechanics, parabolic bars on the drum were appropriate for removing the residue on the strips where maize seeds will be placed. A study was conducted to determine the effect of different parameters such as drum rotation speed, drum diameter and the number of bars on operation performance of the drum. The significance of these parameters of the drum was analyzed using statistical analysis software and the result showed that the speed ratio was the most significant factor that affecting anti-blocking performance. Parametric model of the anti-blocking mechanism was built and simulated with SolidWorks and Adams respectively. Based on the results of simulation, the speed ratio of 1.24, the drum diameter of 150mm and 5 bars were the optimum parameters. Field experiments were conducted in June 2012 when wheat was just harvested, and results indicated that the anti-blocking mechanism worked very well.
