Abstract. The USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides technical and financial assistance for thousands of conservation practices annually, including agricultural waste storage ponds. This paper is the outgrowth of several failures involving exposed geomembrane liners on NRCS-assisted agricultural waste storage ponds. The main points to be covered include: 1) factors responsible for failure of the liners; 2) unique requirements of agricultural waste storage facilities compared to municipal wastewater facilities and solid waste landfills; and 3) recommendations for designing constructible, cost-effective, yet robust liners for agricultural waste storage ponds.
