Development of an international ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ course for Biosystems Engineering undergraduatesPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: 2012 Dallas, Texas, July 29 - August 1, 2012 121341017.(doi:10.13031/2013.42035)Authors: Nicholas M Holden, Francisco Ayuga Keywords: EU-US Atlantis; innovation; entrepreneurship; course In 2009 the project Transatlantic Biosystems Engineering Curriculum and Mobility (TABE.NET) was funded by the EU-US Atlantis programme with four European partners and two US partners. One of the key objectives of TABE.NET is to advance internationalization of Biosystems Engineering curricula and to develop a global awareness within the discipline. A number of specific activities are being undertaken, one of which is the development of an international Innovation and Entrepreneurship course. The motivation for this development is the realisation that modern universities are moving beyond their traditional teaching / research (and in the US extension) agenda into driving innovation and job creation for society. As a modern engineering discipline with strong roots in the food chain, bio-based economy, health and environment, graduates of Biosystems Engineering programmes should have a keen understanding of how to take the ideas that emerge while at university, and realise their potential for job creation. The proposed curriculum for the course is similar to many generic modules in that it covers business development concepts such as the business plan, market research, technology validation, IP, financial planning and legal issues, but it also focuses on issues of specific interest to Biosystems Engineers such as the interaction of eco-design and engineering optimisation, the environment and business ethics. The course is being devised as blocks of materials with general information on fundamental principles or methodologies (e.g. the business plan) and inputs from USA, Ireland, Greece, Spain and Italy detailing location specific issues (e.g. financial and legal regulations) and case studies. Before going live the course will be assessed by industry stakeholders in each country and once tested will be made available to other universities beyond the TABE.NET project.
