Hay bale made by small square baler has a low bulk density ranging from 100 to 180 kg/m3 depending on the grass species and moisture content. Recompression can increase bale density to 400-500 kg/m3, helping reduce storage space and freight rates largely. However, high energy consumption is becoming a main obstacle for producing high-density hay bales. The objective of this research was to determine the specific energy requirements for the recompression of wheat straw bales, when subjected to different types of compression platens.
