Economical Anaerobic Digestion of CAFO Animal WastePublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: 2012 Dallas, Texas, July 29 - August 1, 2012 121337866.(doi:10.13031/2013.41839)Authors: Matthew J Germane, Thomas Menke Keywords: Anaerobic Digestion, Dairy Sustainability, Hog/Swine Sustainability, Manure Treatment, Nutrient Management, Phosphorus Removal, Sand Dewatering Farm regulations continue to force livestock producers to be cautious regarding how and when to spread manure on cropland. Not all farmers are financially able to install an anaerobic digester (AD) but do need the anaerobic digesters benefits to keep their livestock operation sustainable. The EarthMentor Natural Nutrient Reclamation and Treatment System (N2RTS), abbreviated as EMS in this paper, uses a combination of innovative sand separation technology (if necessary) and anaerobic treatment to condense manure nutrients into solid phases and convert approximately 70% of manure liquids into a treated wastewater which can be applied to active cropland as low-nutrient irrigation water.
