Odour and Ammonia Reductions in Ventilation Air from a Unit with Growing-finishing Pigs Using a 3-step Air Cleaner

The present study was carried out to investigate the reduction of odour and ammonia emissions from a growing-finishing pig unit with a commercial 3-step air cleaner (Farm AirClean BIO Flex, SKOV A/S, Denmark). Secondarily, the operating costs of treating all ventilation air during the year were recorded. The air cleaner was connected to a unit with 350 growing-finishing pigs. The biological air cleaner consisted of three vertical cellulose pads. The results demonstrated that the air cleaner significantly reduced the ammonia emissions by 94 % during the year. The air cleaner did reduce the odour concentrations in the outlet air, however, large variations were seen on results from three accredited odour laboratories. For humidifying the cellulose pads, 339 litres of water per produced pig was used. From the air cleaner, 167 litres of water per produced pig was emptied to the manure storage. Electricity consumption for the air cleaner was 4.5 kWh per produced pig, whereas 9.4 kWh per produced pig was used for ventilation. Averagely 17 minutes were spent each week on supervision of the air cleaner. The first cellulose pad was manually washed five times during the trial period due to clogging by dust and biofilm. Four days during the trial period, the air cleaner was repaired, which mostly was due to problems with the automatic washer.
