Emissions of Harmful Gases in Pig Fattening

The aim of this study was to determine emissions and emission factors of toxic ammonia and greenhouse gases from pigs kept on slatted floors. For this purpose, we monitored concentrations of gases (NH3, CO2, N2O, CH4, H2O), airflow rates, and housing and outdoor temperatures in four pig batches each of which was divided into three equal length fattening phases (FPs). We found that all observed parameters showed differences in various FPs of the same batch, as well as between individual batches. In summer batches daily emissions of all gases mainly increased from 1st to 3rd FP. In winter and spring batches they mainly decreased from 1st to 3rd FP. Differences in NH3, CO2, N2O and CH4 daily emission rates were significant between all batches except batches: summer 1 and winter; summer 1 and summer 2; summer 1 and spring, summer 1 and summer 2; winter and spring, winter and summer 2, respectively. During one year, 836 kg of NH3, 266,138 kg of CO2, 68.6 kg of N2O, 4, 176 kg of CH4 and 431,428 kg of H2O was produced. The highest daily emission rates of NH3, CO2 and N2O were found in winter batch, CH4 in summer batch 2 and H2O in spring batch. The lowest emission rates of CO2, CH4 and H2O were recorded in summer batch 1 and NH3 a N2O in summer batch 2. The calculated emission factors showed the values 2.1 kg of NH3, 654 kg of CO2, 0.17 kg of N2O, 10.3 kg of CH4 and 1, 073 kg of H2O per animal and year.
