The latest surge in oil prices hit farmers particularly hard due to their already high fuel, energy and fertilizer costs. Farm-based local sources of renewable energy need to be found to help reduce energy costs for Americas farmers and to help develop rural based processing and manufacturing of biofuel to bolster rural economies. At the same time there is a national problem with nutrient contamination from farming operations which can lead to eutrophication.
