Leymus chinensis is a kind of nutritious and high quality forage for livestock. Selection and configuration of machinery appropriately for the forage production system in Northern China is necessary to the improvement of mechanical efficiency, resource conservancy and cost reduction in the production of natural grassland. Three questionnaires were designed to analyze the mechanical system, cost and relative information. Hulunbuir prairie of Inner Mongolia in China and Northeast China Plain grassland were investigated to study the reasonable machinery configuration and the operating costs. The respondents hold L. chinensis grassland area from 6 ha to 600 ha. Based on the social environment and the need of sustainable development, operations research methods were employed and a linear programming model was developed. The optimum machinery configuration was derived and some strategies and recommendations for L. chinensis grassland in northern China were also proposed.
