Controlled Seed Deposition for Generating Bi-directional RowsPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: 2011 Louisville, Kentucky, August 7-10, 2011 1110611.(doi:10.13031/2013.37248)Authors: Peter Schulze Lammers, Oliver Schmittmann, Hing Kam Keywords: Mechanical hoeing, precise seeding, intra row weeding Quadratic compounds of sugar beets (33 x 33 cm) were sown to be suited for mechanical weeding by length- and transverse hoeing. Thus, the area between plants in the row could be treated using the same hoeing implement as used for hoeing between the rows. From leaf stage four until fourteen hoeing was carried out three times and the number of weeds was counted after each operation. Over two years of observation, bi-directional hoeing was 20 % more effective than longitudinal hoeing, but the most efficient method of weed control was herbicide application.. Yield of the quadratic compound plants was at the same level as with regular planted sugar beets (45 x 22 cm). (Download PDF) (Export to EndNotes)
