First paragraph: Over the past couple of decades there has been increased interest in the production of biodegradable polymeric materials or plastics that are appropriate for pharmaceutical, medical, electrical, or agrochemical applications. This has fueled research in the development of polymeric materials that can be derived from microbial sources. Microbial polymers of possible interest in this area include microbial cellulose, polyhydroxyalkanoates, and thermoplastic starches.
