First paragraph: An analysis of the present situation of world agriculture shows a completely contrasting situation between industrialized and developing countries. This disparity has greatly influenced the possibilities of utilizing solar energy in agriculture. In industrialized countries, the intensive mechanization of agricultural production resulted in high labor productivity. The use of high-quality seeds, pesticides, fertilizers, and the mechanization of almost all farm operations have significantly increased crop yields. At present the energy supply in industrialized countries is still sufficient. Electricity and fossil fuels are available at relatively low prices. Almost all farms are connected to the public grid. As a result, solar technologies that can be used independently of the weather conditions have to compete with the highly efficient and reliable conventional technologies.
