First paragraph: Engines convert fuel chemical energy into mechanical power. Combustion of the fuel causes one or more reciprocating pistons, each contained in a cylinder, to turn a crankshaft. The crankshaft delivers the power via a flywheel and an output shaft to the desired load. A cross-sectional view of an engine is shown in Fig. 1.19.
