Abstract: Research was conducted to examine the effects of discharging untreated municipal solid waste (MSW) dumpsite leachate on the small-scale unregulated urban drainage river (Iba Oku River) in Uyo municipality, Nigeria. In-stream spring properties were regressed on loading concentration of the leachate properties for effect and 90-100% hike in the in-stream chemical properties of the receiving water was explained directly by the point source pollution (leachate) effect. Over 73% of the 21 chemical properties of the receiving water analyzed had concentrations significantly above the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standards making it not acceptable for urban/rural drinking water supply. Significantly impaired chemical parameters/properties amongst others included lead, iron, BOD5, conductivity and pH. The concentration of bacteria in the downstream water indicated that the water could cause serious health problems if consumed by humans. Analysis of variance indicated significantly high variability between leachate and receiving water at stations S2, S3 and S5, showing that the effect of upstream leachate effluent reduced downstream the receiving spring, and suggesting that regulation of percentage total maximum daily load (TMDL) along or downstream the receiving spring is possible and will be responsive to abatement measures on the leachate loading.
