Technical Note: Extraction of Yellowfin Tuna (Thunnus albacares) Orbital Oil by Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

The objective of this study was to extract yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacores) orbital oil with supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2). The effects of extracting time (60 to 300 min), temperature (30C to 80C), and operating pressure (15 to 40 MPa) on the yield of tuna orbital oil were systematically investigated by using single-factor analysis method. The parameters of extraction time, temperature, and pressure that led to maximal oil yield were used as the center point for a central composite design to optimize the condition of SC-CO2 extraction of tuna oil. The results showed that the optimal extraction condition for oil yield was 185.1 min, 57.8C, and 35.8 MPa. Under this condition, the predicted value of oil yield was 20.2%, very close to the average experimental value of 20.8%. The unsaponified matter, peroxide value, and iodine value of extracted yellowfin tuna orbital oil were 0.77%, 2.33 mg kg-1, and 192.19%, respectively. Docosahexanoic acid accounted for 27.1% of the total fatty acids in the extracted oil.
