ABSTRACT THIS paper outlines the distribution and management problems encountered in using 10 cm diameter PVC pipe for a 'sheet flow' vegetative-soil filter system for dairy liquid waste from a 70 cow dairy operation at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL. Considerable emphasis is on the practical operation and layout but data included indicates the effectiveness of the system in reducing the pollution potential, as well as some effects on soil and plant growth. Rotation of ap-plication sites and proper maintenance of the system are essential for satisfactory operation.
