ABSTRACT MODERN neutron meters reliably measure soil water content; however, good accuracy requires an understanding of theory, accurate calibration, and knowledge of possible errors. This paper summarizes the theory, explains the calibration of one depth moisture meter, presents a new method for near-surface calibration, and discusses sources for error.
