Hence, there is a growing interest in mitigating VOCs from swine operations. Catalytic ozonation is an emerging technology for mitigating VOCs. Hence, the objective of this research is to test catalytic ozonation technology for mitigating VOCs from swine houses. In a laboratory study, vapors of 20-200 ppmv isovaleric acid (23 C) were treated using 201 ppmv ozone in a differential reactor (28 cm x 2.54 cm diameter) containing activated carbon (5 g) as catalyst. Preliminary results indicated that 38-68% of isovaleric acid was oxidized in a 1-s residence time. Studies are currently underway to determine the kinetics of oxidation of isovaleric acid and the results will be used to scale up and design pilot scale reactors. The results from this research are expected to provide new knowledge on removal kinetics of isovaleric acid and hasten the development of effective and practical air treatment systems for swine farming operations. Such air pollution control systems have the potential to significantly reduce VOCs, improve the air quality, and the health of the farm workers employed in swine housing operations.
