China is one of the top ten pineapple production countries in the world. When a harvesting season comes, farmers have to challenge hot weather, heavy and deficient labor work, short harvesting period, and easy injuries due to sharp leaf of pineapple trees during harvesting. It is in a great need to automate the pineapple harvesting process in order to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the operation and reduce the need of labor force. The research work reported in this paper is a part of a large project which has an utmost goal of developing a pineapple harvesting robotic system.
