As part of a study to evaluate the present consumption pattern of crop residues in Nigeria and feasibility of introducing biomass fuel-based applications, a cost analysis of energetically available crop residues was carried out. Residues amount and cost were estimated from nine selected crops. It is estimated that more than 70 million tonnes of these residues were produced in the year 2004. The cost estimates of these residues using 2004 crops production data vary from US $6.45/tonne to US $23.12/tonne (or US $ 19.75/GJ and US $ 20.93/GJ) , depending on the type of crop residue and the transportation distance.
