Introductory paragraphs: This is the third and final chapter on the design of members subjected to axial loadings. This chapter covers the design of the connections for bolted, welded, and pin-connected members. The design of members subjected to axial tension and axial compression loadings was discussed in the previous two chapters. Our primary emphasis in these chapters was the determination of the member dimensions. We did not discuss how to select the number and diameter of the bolts or how to determine the length of a slot for a welded tension member. Both of these topics are related to the design of the fastener. This chapter starts with a discussion of bolted joints and then considers joints made using fillet welds. The design of bolted joints uses the simple or average stress material introduced in Chapter 2. The design of welded joints is new and starts with an introduction to fillet welds. Since welds are used to fasten plates to the top and bottom surfaces of beams and to fasten members in a rigid frame, this basic information is also used in latter chapters. This chapter concludes with the design of plate links and eyebars, two types of connections for members in axial tension.
