For several years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) have partnered to promote environmental credit trading involving agriculture. To give impetus to this effort USDA has funded the development of the Nutrient Trading Tool (NTT), a farmer-friendly web-based computer program that can reliably estimate the nutrient credits associated with alternative conservation practices. With USDAs Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) funding, Texas Institute for Applied Environmental Research (TIAER) staff developed NTT as an augmentation of a previous program that could only estimate nitrogen credits. NTT provides farmers, government officials, and other users with a fast and efficient method of estimating nitrogen and phosphorus credits for water quality trading, as well as other water quality, water quantity, and farm production impacts associated with conservation practices. The information obtained from the tool can help farmers to determine the most cost-effective practice alternatives for their individual operations and provide them with more advantageous options in a water quality credit trading program.
