Electronic Control of a Belt Continuously Variable Transmission for a Quarter Scale TractorPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Paper number SD09-1100, ASABE/CSBE North Central Intersectional Meeting . (doi: 10.13031/2013.29148) @2009Authors: Matthew T Wold, T A Bon Keywords: Continuously Variable Transmission, Microcontroller, Quarter Scale It was considered desirable to have a variable speed transmission on the NDSU Quarter Scale Tractor that would be more efficient than previous hydrostatic systems. The selected approach was to use a belt type Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) from an ATV. CVTs typically use a system of weights and pulleys to vary the speed ratio based on engine speed. This system was removed and replaced with an electronic control system developed by the authors that allows the operator to vary the speed ratio independent of engine speed.
