As anaerobic digestion in the dairy industry becomes better understood as an accepted primary method for manure management, the treatment of the effluent and the associated solids has become a significant issue. The management of effluent and solids at two dairies, a 1,000 head facility in western Washington (Farm A) and a 12,000 head facility in Indiana (Farm B) are discussed. Both facilities utilize plug flow type digestion for primary treatment of the manure, one a flush facility bedding cows on sand and then selling the digested and aerobically composted manure solids for bedding off-site and one a scrape facility bedding on sand.
