Pilot-scale composting systems are required to perform systematic composting simulations under different operating conditions. Pilot-scale compost reactors provide the requisite degree of control and replication of process parameters in order to accurately study composting dynamics. Full-scale composting systems by contrast are difficult to control and are not well suited for systematic studies.
