Abstract [First paragraph]: This section begins with a brief review of the parameters used to describe tractive performance, introduced in Part I of this chapter, followed by the factors affecting performance that are important for traction devices in general, and then a review of the literature specific to tractive performance of wheels and of tracks. The emphasis is on advances since the mid-1960s.
