Abstract [First paragraph]: Although analytical models based on fundamental or basic principles are critical to provide a good insight into any physical or biological process, some systems are too complex and present a great challenge for proper mathematical treatment of the problem. In spite of the strides made in elastoplastic soil mechanics (Wulfsohn, 2002; Wulfsohn and Adams, 2002) and numerical analysis of agricultural soil-machine systems (Upadhyaya et al., 2002), soil-machine/soil-plant interaction continues to be a very challenging analytical problem. Dimensional analysis and similitude methodology can be very useful tools to develop empirical prediction equations to predict system behavior. We briefly outline the basics of these two techniques, before considering their application to soil dynamics.
