AN automated rotating gate enabled an existing open channel furrow irrigation system to be adapted to surge flow. Equipment performance was quite reliable. System hydraulics were analyzed with respect to unequal outlet elevations, spatially varied flow within an irrigation bay, and unsteady flow due to the opening or closing of the automated gate. System design considerations are presented.
