Buttresses as a Windbracing Alternative for Single and Multi-Story Agricultural BuildingsPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Applied Engineering in Agriculture. 5(4): 583-588. (doi: 10.13031/2013.26565) @1989Authors: D. I. Masse, J. A. Munroe Keywords: Diaphragms, Wind load, Wind sway resistance Adequate windbracing should be designed into all buildings. For agricultural buildings, buttresses were found to be quite feasible, particularly for longer buildings where the construction of adequate diaphragms can be impractical. For two-story, tie-stall dairy barns, interior buttresses consisting simply of braces at alternate posts and coinciding with stall partitions can be practical and effective.
