Experimental procedures for testing a prototype battery powered, skid-steer loader are described. Battery discharge tests were conducted to determine the capacity of the battery. Vehicle tests established values for the maximum acceleration of the vehicle, as well the battery energy required to maintain different draft loads at four operational speeds. Turning tests established the turn rate and the battery power required for different bucket loads. Loader tests were also conducted to determine the influence of load lifted on the battery energy required and on lift and lower times for the loader arms. A simple duration test involving a repetive cycle of activities was used to determine the range potential of the vehicle. The acceleration of the vehicle was within the design range expected. The turning tests indicated that insufficient torque was available when the loader bucket was carrying its maximum load.
