Selection of An Appropriate Winery Process Wastewater Treatment TechnologyPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Eleventh Individual and Small Community Sewage Systems Conference Proceedings, 20-24 October 2007, Warwick, Rhode Island 701P1107cd.(doi:10.13031/2013.24018)Authors: Glenn Dombeck, P.E., Maher Tleimat Keywords: Winery process wastewater, distillation, evaporation, multiple effect vapor compression distillation (MEVCD), Wiped-Film Rotating Disk (WFRD), brine Wineries offer an interesting case study for the onsite management of wastewaters generated as a byproduct of production. Winery process wastewater is recognized for its significant variability in both flow and loading of organic, nutrient and dissolved solids concentration. Historically, a variety of treatment technologies have been employed to reduce organic loading prior to land application. Increasing concern over the long-term impact of dissolved solids on soil and groundwater quality challenges the performance capability of conventional treatment technologies. A high performance multiple effect vapor compression distillation (MEVCD) system was tested to determine its suitability for treatment of winery wastewater. Testing on four different samples of winery wastewater indicate that this approach is highly effective at removal of dissolved solids and can reduce by at least ten-fold the quantity of liquid waste requiring disposal. Volatile organics present in the winery wastewater are not effectively removed in the distillation process and require subsequent treatment. Additional long-term testing of the distillation technology coupled with a variety of pre- and post-treatments is underway to identify an appropriate treatment scheme.
