Quantifying the cumulative impact of existing or proposed decentralized wastewater management systems on receiving water bodies is a significant challenge. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly used in the broad scale assessment of decentralized wastewater management performance. This paper presents a case study that demonstrates the use of a new GIS based Decentralized Sewage Model (DSM) to undertake a quantitative assessment of the impact of individual on-site wastewater management systems on water quality in a drinking water catchment in Victoria, Australia.
