Today, engineers are an increasingly vital resource, directly affecting economic success and national competitiveness. As the world 'flattens,' our ability to create, harness, and direct engineering and technical creativity determines where in the spectrum of global competition countries will fall. The situation in the United States is cause for alarm. This paper examines the trends in engineering education and the implied capabilities that result. In light of policy decisions and national investments, we will examine some of the natural outcomes and unavoidable consequences of these decisions and how that drives future foci of engineering energy.
