A methodology to classify agricultural tractors according to their energy efficiency

The reduction of world reserves of oil encourages using machines with a better energy performance. Energy losses in agricultural tractors take place mainly in the engine and in the transmission. In this research some indexes, called cj, cjt, ck and ckt are obtained which represent the relationship between fuel consumption and available power in the tractors. With these indexes a classification of tractors according on their fuel efficiency could be established. The indexes have been derived from official tests performed in stations which follow the OECD test codes. They take into account the efficiency of the engine and also of the transmission. The final step is the proposal of a method to classify agricultural tractors according to the index that best represents their energy efficiency. 214 models of tractors sold in the last five years in Spain are classified in seven categories, from the lowest to the highest fuel consumers, according to cjt. This classification has been used by the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture to give a financial support for the acquisition of new tractors of the most efficient categories. For the future we propose the use of the ckt index for the classification of tractors. This index gives better information of the fuel consumption of the engine of the tractor and it is easier to obtain.
