The Cause of Powerhop

Powerhop of Agricultural Tractors has been a problem since the early 1960’s. The problem became worse with the advent of MFWD and 4WD tractors with radial ply tires. Much work has been done to abate the problem after it happens but little has been done to understand the basic cause of powerhop. One area that has had virtually no attention is the tangential (fore-aft) spring characteristics of the tire. Vertical and torsional spring and damping characteristics of tires have been included in powerhop models but the tire tangential spring-mass characteristics have been ignored and largely misunderstood. This paper shows how the tangential spring is unique, is not the same as torsional, and can be a driving force for powerhop.
