Ultrafiltration membranes are used in a number of separation processes for the purification of high-value biopharmaceuticals. Until recently, it was thought that in order to obtain a good separation by ultrafiltration, the solutes should differ in molecular weight by at least a factor of 10. However, in recent years significant experimental and theoretical evidence has been gathered to show that the separation of proteins through a membrane is also affected by the electrostatic interactions between the charged proteins and the charged membranes. The purpose of the present work was to examine the improvement in separation achieved by purposely adding a charge to ultrafiltration membranes.
