Glycerol represents the major byproduct in the biodiesel industry. In general, production of 100 kg of biodiesel yields ~10 kg of crude glycerol. Because it is prohibitively expensive to purify the crude glycerol into materials that can be used in the medical, health, and cosmetics industries, biodiesel producers must either dispose of it or give it away.
