In August of 2006, 32 participants from Ontario, Canada traveled to the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark to survey sixteen farm based, and co-operative and community based anaerobic digester systems. Systems were operating successfully on farms milking from 100 cows to farms milking 4000 cows. The purpose of this paper is to report on why these systems are operating so successfully in Europe, and examine what technology, and requirements can be readily transferred to North America to make it a viable option for dairy producers.
