This paper presents an extended abstract of a paper of the same title published in volume 49 (2006), issue 6, pages 1003-1022of the Transactions of the ASABE. The paper is one of six TMDL-related papers in this volume of the Transactions. These papers are a product of the multi-state USDA- CSREES Hatch project - S1004 "Development and Evaluation of TMDL Planning and Assessment Tools and Processes." In this paper we describe four commonly used DO simulation models (QUAL2E, HSPF, EFDC, and WASP) in detail while the characteristics of several others are summarized in tabular form. A case study is used to illustrate the process of developing a DO TMDL.
