Compression and Relaxation Properties of Timothy HayPublished by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers, St. Joseph, Michigan www.asabe.org Citation: Paper number MBSK 06-205, ASABE/CSBE North Central Intersectional Meeting . (doi: 10.13031/2013.22366) @2006Authors: Sana J Talebi, Lope G Tabil, Anthony Opoku, Mark D Shaw Keywords: Densification, compaction, moisture content, visco-elastic properties, density, asymptotic modulus, disinfestation The compression and relaxation characteristics of timothy hay were analyzed with respect to hay moisture content, applied load, and hay quality. The tests were performed using a Baldwin hydraulic universal testing machine model 60 HVL-1254 and the data was digitally recorded. The moisture contents of the samples were adjusted to 6, 10, 15, and 18% wet basis. The applied loads ranged from 90 to 240 kN, in 30 kN increments. Two qualities of timothy hay were used, high quality and low quality. Various compression models were fitted to the data in order to find suitable equations expressing timothy hays compression characteristics. The relaxation data was used to determine the asymptotic modulus of timothy hay. Results showed that with an increasing force applied to the samples, sample height expectedly decreased, while the density and pressure of the material increased. During the relaxation portion of the test, the average pressure reduction ranged between 34 to 45%. The low quality hay was found to relax 42.13% as compared to the higher quality hay which relaxed a lesser amount of 39.78%. Samples with a higher moisture content relaxed up to 10% more than low moisture content samples. Finally, the applied load appeared to not affect the degree of relaxation.
