A software was developed to serve as a standard tool for data entry, storage, display and retrieval of data derived from on-farm rice research experiments. This integrated all the quantifiable variables used in different disciplines (agronomy, physiology, soil, nutrient, weather, pest, and socioeconomic) established for standard use at the International Rice Research Institute. The paper outlines the approach in the design of the database structure and the development of the software to address the requirements for use in long term statistical analyses, crop simulation models and decision support systems. An object-oriented programming language called Delphi (Object Pascal) was used to create the Windowsbased graphic user interface. DBISAM, an embeddable database engine, was used to create the databases and tables to allow native compilation in the language and to solve incompatibility issues. The software features the ASCII text and XML formats for data exchange. Future modification of the software would provide options for exclusion and/or addition of variables and possibly for use in other crops. Also, the architecture allows for future porting of application to a web based or web service system.
