In a recent study to monitor chemical transport from earthen waste containment facilities, the challenge of installing instrumentation to measure oxidation-reduction (redox) potential over a long period of time needed to be addressed. Simple redox probes were constructed and placed with groundwater sampling tips at various locations and depths below the storages being monitored. To test the probes, a column study and laboratory testing were completed and readings were taken in several storages. This paper outlines probe construction, installation and reading. Results of the field, column, laboratory, and field data are compared to arrive at recommendations for proper protocol for future use of similar probes. Results show agreement between constructed probes and commercial probes in laboratory tests. By measuring both general chemistry and insitu pH, redox, temperature and D.O. results can be better analysed using several groundwater speciation models and these results further compared to conventional fluid transport models for analysis of a transport situation. It is hoped that, the resulting system of Eh measurement will provide a cheaper and faster method of monitoring chemical movement than, detailed analysis of numerous water samples collected at regular intervals.
