Agricultural equipment manufacturers design and produce many types of equipment that are powered by diesel engines. To be successful these machines must be reliable, durable, easy to maintain, safe and cost effective. The engine must be integrated into the machine in a manner that allows it to meet comparable goals. There are water, fuel, air, lubrication and structural systems that must interface with the machine. The design engineer's knowledge of how these systems act and respond is important to the engine's successful use. This paper briefly describes these systems, shows how they function, how they interact, and explains why they must be understood to successfully install and apply diesel engines in agricultural machinery.
