This commentary is an adapted acceptance speech given at the American Association for Higher Education meeting in Atlanta in March 2005. The author was asked to speak to approximately 100 Deans, Provosts, and Presidents about service-learning and engaged scholarship as the recipient of the 2005 Ernest A. Lynton Award for Faculty Professional Service and Academic Outreach.
